The attack on the Twin Towers in New York brought attention to more than just the spread of terrorism around the globe; it also showed how vulnerable our communications systems are, especially in regards to cell phones. The FCC has ordered app cellular phone companies to institute technology allowing for cell phones to be traced within 100 meters. The cellular companies for the most part have integrated the GPS technology into the actual phone itself instead of taking on the momentous task of changing and modifying their networks of towers.

Now before you get all excited about the fact that your phone may have GPS technology let me set you straight. This is not the kind that you have in your car or use on your boat when you go fishing offshore. This is exclusively for tracking where you are when you are making a call. If you are a good guy this can be great news, if you get lost or in trouble and dial 911 they can locate you. If you are a bad guy, or a terrorist, this isn't great news for you because they can now trace your calls and find out exactly where you are to take you down.

Now, on to a brighter outlook, the cell carriers are working to enable customer accessible GPS service. Some of these are available now and able to be utilized through third party providers.

Motorola is the maker for cellular phone GPS tracking units for Nextel using the Motorola i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 and i830 iDEN®. As on of the leaders in bringing this technology to the market, Motorola sources say that the phones are programmable which allows for software developers to design the applications that will allow the user of the phone access to the GPS data in addition to the providers of the service.

As of now, the Nextel Corporation offers a wide variety of cell phone GPS tracking solutions made for use with the above mentioned Motorola cell phones. The Mobile Locator One is of the well-known cell phone GPS tracking solutions developed by Nextel. In addition there are other solutions are provided by the affiliates of Nextel itself, as well as by third parties like Trimble and Mapquest.

Nokia recently announced that they were offering their Xpress-On GPS available as optional hardware to the owners of the Nokia 5140 model cell phones in North America. This would allow for the phones to be used over the GSM networks through location service applications.

Hopefully with the advances we are seeing it won't be long before the GPS technology is widely available. It is already available in smart phones like the Treo as an upgrade with additional software.

First, you need to find the two disconnected wires in the cowl behind the headlight of your motorcycle. Now, you should connect the power to the mount of the G.A.R.M.I.N G.P.S Z.U.M.O. Make sure that you use a voltmeter to determine the polarity of the wire and connect the wires on the mount to the wires in the cowl behind the headlight



After the power is set, you should now install the handlebar base for the G.P.S. You could wrap the U-bolt around the handlebar and guide the ends through the handlebar base by using the wrench to tighten the nuts to secure the base. Or, you could install the handlebar base to the clutch or brake clamp bracket by removing the two factory-installed bolts from the motorcycle 's clutch or base clamp bracket. You will then need to guide the bolts from the G.P.S through the handlebar base, spacers and clamp bracket and tighten the new bolts to secure the base.



After setting up the handlebar base, you can attack the base plate piece to the G.P.S 's mount. Now thread the flathead bolts through the mount and base plate pieces and you should then add the nuts to the ends of the bolts and tighten them securely by using a wrench



Now, you could attach the base plate to the handlebar base by attaching the bottom of the double socket arm to the ball on the handlebar base by snapping them together. After you tighten it and hold everything in place, you can now adjust the mount for better visibility and then tighten the knob on the double socket arm to secure it.



Lastly, you can install the G.A.R.M.I.N G.P.S receiver to the mount and plug with the power cable. Now flip up the lever located at the top. Flip the magnetic weather cap down underneath and snap the receiver into the mount and flip the lever at the top. Tighten the security screw at the front of the lever to complete the whole installation process.

Warning: Do not neglect the above tips if you want to install your G.A.R.M.I.N G.P.S Z.U.M.O properly.

The Best Handheld GPS - The Garmin Oregon Series

When it comes to the best handheld GPS systems, the first and only name that pops into our mind is Garmin. This company has been producing the highest quality GPS devices in the 21st century, for a very good price. Garmin's products are well known for their extremely sensitive positioning and tracking, as well as their long battery life and reliability.

The latest addition to the higher end of the handheld GPS devices' spectrum is the Oregon series. The main distinguishing feature of the Oregon series is the large, 3-inch diameter touchscreen. Yes, you no longer need a dozen buttons on the handheld unit, which means there's finally enough space for a large, color LCD screen.

All the models of the series come with many features. Actually, I can't think of any more really useful features. Here's a complete list, with some description:

Electronic compass
This is a very useful tool. Most GPS devices can only determine your direction while you're moving. A digital compass however, will always show your direction with pinpoint (2 degrees) accuracy.

Barometric altimeter
This shows your altitude wherever you are, with 3 feet accuracy. Another important function for hikers.

Wireless unit-to-unit transfer
Now this is a feature I've been looking for a long time. You can share trails, waypoints, caches and other information with your travel mates very easily, if they also have Oregon GPS units. No cables or SD cards needed. Be aware that the Oregon 200 doesn't support this feature.

Other features include:
Custom points of interest, picture viewer, hunting and fishing calendar, geocaching mode, area calculation and many more. Garmin Oregon is the swiss army knife of handheld GPS systems.

There are three different models in the series:

Oregon 200
This is the basic model for a list price of 450 dollars. It lacks some of the features (wireless unit-to-unit transfer, digital compass, altimeter) and has only 24 MB of memory. I don't recommend this one, because the additional price of a microSD card (you're gonna need one, 24 megs isn't enough for anything) will make it cost almost as much as the next model, the Oregon 300. Also, it doesn't have some of the important features I mentioned.

Oregon 300
The next step, with all the features and 850 megabytes of memory. It costs only 50 bucks more than the Oregon 200, making this the best handheld GPS unit in this price range.

Oregon 400
This model is an extended version of the 300. It comes with 4 Gigabytes of memory and some maps installed. Three versions of the 400 are available:
- 400t, which comes with a topographic map of the US.
- 400c with Bluechart g2, and
- 400i with maps of inland lakes.
All three models cost 600 dollars. Make sure you buy the one with the map you need.

The Oregon series is the choice of the professional hikers, fishermen, hunters and other adventureous individuals. For its price, the Oregon 300 is the best handheld GPS system currently on the market.

A common question today is 'what is the best device in GPS technology available?' Well the answer to that question varies infinitely as one person may consider something good and another considers the same thing inferior. The color display passed all tests when it came to readability and its accuracy isn't bad either. It doesn't weight much so carrying it around won't be a hindrance.
