The Best Handheld GPS - The Garmin Oregon Series

When it comes to the best handheld GPS systems, the first and only name that pops into our mind is Garmin. This company has been producing the highest quality GPS devices in the 21st century, for a very good price. Garmin's products are well known for their extremely sensitive positioning and tracking, as well as their long battery life and reliability.

The latest addition to the higher end of the handheld GPS devices' spectrum is the Oregon series. The main distinguishing feature of the Oregon series is the large, 3-inch diameter touchscreen. Yes, you no longer need a dozen buttons on the handheld unit, which means there's finally enough space for a large, color LCD screen.

All the models of the series come with many features. Actually, I can't think of any more really useful features. Here's a complete list, with some description:

Electronic compass
This is a very useful tool. Most GPS devices can only determine your direction while you're moving. A digital compass however, will always show your direction with pinpoint (2 degrees) accuracy.

Barometric altimeter
This shows your altitude wherever you are, with 3 feet accuracy. Another important function for hikers.

Wireless unit-to-unit transfer
Now this is a feature I've been looking for a long time. You can share trails, waypoints, caches and other information with your travel mates very easily, if they also have Oregon GPS units. No cables or SD cards needed. Be aware that the Oregon 200 doesn't support this feature.

Other features include:
Custom points of interest, picture viewer, hunting and fishing calendar, geocaching mode, area calculation and many more. Garmin Oregon is the swiss army knife of handheld GPS systems.

There are three different models in the series:

Oregon 200
This is the basic model for a list price of 450 dollars. It lacks some of the features (wireless unit-to-unit transfer, digital compass, altimeter) and has only 24 MB of memory. I don't recommend this one, because the additional price of a microSD card (you're gonna need one, 24 megs isn't enough for anything) will make it cost almost as much as the next model, the Oregon 300. Also, it doesn't have some of the important features I mentioned.

Oregon 300
The next step, with all the features and 850 megabytes of memory. It costs only 50 bucks more than the Oregon 200, making this the best handheld GPS unit in this price range.

Oregon 400
This model is an extended version of the 300. It comes with 4 Gigabytes of memory and some maps installed. Three versions of the 400 are available:
- 400t, which comes with a topographic map of the US.
- 400c with Bluechart g2, and
- 400i with maps of inland lakes.
All three models cost 600 dollars. Make sure you buy the one with the map you need.

The Oregon series is the choice of the professional hikers, fishermen, hunters and other adventureous individuals. For its price, the Oregon 300 is the best handheld GPS system currently on the market.

The Best GPS Device Available

A common question today is 'what is the best device in GPS technology available?' Well the answer to that question varies infinitely as one person may consider something good and another considers the same thing inferior. It is best to ask that question based on some common parameters like do you want an all round system? Are you willing to spend a little extra? Do you want a near custom made device?

This also has capacity to insert a memory stick and is also waterproof. This device is sensibility over style.

Ranked number 3 is the Earthmate GPS PN-20 from Delorme Company. It is nearly as expensive as the number one device on the list but what sets this piece of navigating metal apart from the other two is the ability to show terrain, and it is surprisingly very clear on a 2.2 inch screen. The color display passed all tests when it came to readability and its accuracy isn't bad either. It doesn't weight much so carrying it around won't be a hindrance.

Now all of the devices listed above were based on all round perspectives, naturally you the buyer will have your own personal requirements and the best way to achieve this is by testing a product yourself or picking something that will be stronger in one area but may lack another feature.

Garmin Forerunner 305 and 405 GPS - What's the Difference?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 201 which is showing signs of age and a hard life! It has served me well over the last few years and I've been looking at buying a new Garmin GPS to help with my running training and have settled on one of the new Garmins - But which one?

Well looking at the Garmin Forerunner 305 and 405 specs they do pretty much the same thing as far as training is concerned. Both will record time, distance, laps routes etc. What the 405 has done is to add a lot more technology into a much smaller package.

Connecting to your computer

If you want to connect the Forerunner 305 to your computer this has to be done with the good old USB cable., which is fine. The Forerunner 405, on the other hand has built in ANT technology which allows it to automatically transfer training data to your PC when it is in range (the PC has to be switched on, of course!). The same technology also allows you to transfer training data with other Forerunners 405s so you can try one of your running partners workouts! The Forerunner 405 comes with a USB ANT dongle so your computer is ready to receive data from the GPS.

Touch Bezel

What really sets the Forerunner 405 apart is that it is relatively small and very comfortable to wear, and the bezel is used to navigate round the various screens and menus - this works very well when you want to change screens while you are training. What is really good is the ability to drag your finger round the bezel to scroll menus and change values, like running speed etc. To turn on the back light you simple touch two areas of the bezel Simultaneously.

Overall the Forerunner 405 seems more advanced than the Forerunner 305 (it's more expensive, so should be!). But there are a couple of things to consider: Firstly the face of the 305 is slightly larger overall and in some respects has a clearer display - and secondly the battery life of the 305 is 2 hours longer than the 405 at 10 hours (although the Forerunner 405 does have a two week power save mode)

Well, that's about it, as previously stated, in terms of accuracy and basic training functionality both GPSs a pretty much equal. You just need to decide if you want to pay an extra £50.00 or so for the technology built into the Forerunner 405.
