Handheld GPS Devices - Analyze Your Needs Before You Purchase!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Olafur_Ingthorsson]Olafur Ingthorsson

Handheld GPS devices represent a special category of all available GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver units used in various situations and for different applications. The major applicability or usefulness of handheld, portable GPS devices can be divided into two distinctive categories, i.e. for outdoor leisure and sport activities like hiking, trekking, climbing, camping and running and, secondly, for industrial applications like land surveying and position measurements at construction sites. Utilizing the GPS navigation satellite system, correct location of the GPS receiver can be determined by retrieving exact longitude, latitude and altitude coordinates. Today, most GPS receiver units, whether handheld or not, communicate through radio signals with at least four GPS satellites, whereby three satellites determine the exact location of the receiver and the fourth satellite is used for correcting the receiver’s clock. After the Selective Availability regulation, which provided certain accuracy reservation for military use, was ended in 2000, the precision of civilian GPS improved from about 100m to about 20m.

Handheld GPS devices provide tremendous flexibility and convenience for the user. Not only can the user continuously monitor his, or her, exact and current geographical location and path of travel, but handheld GPS devices can be fitted for relaying with central offices or base stations that can track or follow the user for security and safety reasons. For example, GPS devices that can communicate with and supply coordinates to a central station are very popular by mountain climbers and hikers. As the GPS system has developed and improved over the past years, many new applications have emerged for the users of handheld GPS devices. Not only can users determine their current location, but also obtain a multitude of additional and supportive information through geographical maps, inserted in the GPS receiver units, such as precise navigation, locations of restaurants and hotels, weather reports, tourist attractions, etc. Currently, there are a number of companies producing and offering many different handheld GPS devices. Some of the best known include, Garmin, Magellan and DeLorme. The devices have a broad range of features, attributes and, of course, price tags. Before selecting a particular handheld device, it is important to know what you will be using it for. For example, a GPS device used for hiking may be less applicable for mountain climbing or, even less, running. Obviously, devices for industrial applications have particular requirements and qualities. If you are looking for a handheld GPS device that can be used in different circumstances, a multipurpose unit could be the answer. Furthermore, you need to have an idea of what features you are interested in or require in addition to the standard GPS and mapping functionality, e.g.:

Touch screen window

Color screen or black and white

Built-in camera (like in mobile phones)

SD (memory) card expandability

Voice recorder

Built-in electronic compass

Barometer

MP3 Music Player

External antenna connector

Etc. etc.

Obviously, as the feature list increases, so does the price. Another important thing to keep in mind is considering what geographical maps may be included or applicable to your needs, e.g. outdoor and recreational maps, street maps or marine maps. Most handheld GPS devices come with some pre-loaded or built-in geographical maps, for example a base map of the USA and Canada containing major highways, city centers, bodies of water and more. You need to find out whether you need additional detailed maps that can be added to the handheld device, for example detailed cartographic maps, topographic maps, and more.

Still another important issue to keep in mind is the GPS software that is normally included with the purchase of a new handheld GPS for uploading GPS data to a computer. By that you can conveniently view all your maps, waypoints, trails and routes from your computer screen. Many other interesting advanced features and possibilities can be implemented with an appropriate handheld GPS receiver including, playing "hide-and-seek" and "treasure-hunting" through geocaching or importing your tracks, waypoints and routes into Google Earth for tracking and monitoring. In short, handheld GPS devices offer a plethora of wonderful possibilities and options.

For maximizing its benefits, you should carefully consider your needs and requirements before you actually purchase a new handheld GPS. Common retail prices for handheld GPS devices range from $100 up to $800USD depending on built-in or available features and attributes.

Best Hunting GPS - 7 Reasons the Delorme PN-40 Makes a Great GPS For Hunting

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rhonda_Percell]Rhonda Percell

The Delorme PN-40 is a great GPS unit but it also makes a great hunting GPS. The 7 main reasons it is great for hunting are:

1. Waterproof - The Delorme PN -40 is waterproof and can operate in very humid conditions. This is important for any hunter using a GPS in the field when the weather can turn rainy or snowy while hunting.

2. Electronic Compass - The PN-40 also comes with an electronic compass. An electronic compass is essential on any GPS that will be used for hunting because it allows the hunter to get a bearing while sitting still in a tree stand or ground blind.

3. Topographical Maps Included - Delorme includes topographical maps with the purchase of a PN-40 so the hunter will have the proper maps needed to look for popular hunting areas such as waterholes, ridges, and possible funnels that animals use.

4. Bright Color Screen - The Delorme PN-40 has a bright, color screen. This makes it easy for hunters to view topographical maps of their hunting area while out in the field.

5. Large Internal Memory - The PN-40 has 1GB of internal memory. This allows hunters to store 1,000 waypoints of areas of interests such as tree stand and blind locations, points to glass from, and truck/ATV/camp locations. Delorme has also included a SD card slot so hunters can put different hunting areas on different memory cards for easy access to their hunting spots.

6. Rugged Construction - The Delorme PN-40 has a impact-resistant rubberized housing. The rubberized housing allows the hunter to get a firm grip on the unit while out in the field.

7. WAAS-enabled - The PN-40 is WAAS-enabled for accuracy within 3 meters. This allows for precise pin-point locating which is especially helpful when using a GPS unit to document a blood trail and recover an animal.

So, as you can see the Delorme PN-40 makes a great hunting GPS. With it's electronic compass, included topographical maps, and rugged construction is would make a perfect GPS for any hunter.

Using the Garmin Forerunner Running GPS Watch For Interval Training

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rod_McAnally]Rod McAnally

Looking for a GPS running watch? Few would argue that Garmin's Forerunner line is not among the leading contenders in the GPS running watch market.

After their widely acclaimed Forerunner 205/305 and in more recent times the 405, Garmin have just released two upgrades to their popular sports timepieces, the Forerunner 405CX, an upgrade to the 405 and the Forerunner 310XT which improves on the 205/305 watches.

The 310XT is the more revolutionary of the two upgrades with water resistance and a much longer battery life, but the 405CX, which has improved calorie measuring abilities is selling at a price very close to the 405, so is a worthy purchase if you are buying a new watch.

One of the reasons for the Forerunner's popularity is the watch's support features that can be used in all types of running training. One such feature (or group of features), that caters to the diverse types of running sessions are the Forerunner Workout Types.

The Forerunner watches support four different workout types:

Simple Workouts

Heart Rate Workouts

Interval Workouts; and

Advanced workout types. This article explores only Interval Workouts and how they can be applied to Interval or repetition training. Our website has more information on the other Forerunner workout types.

Most runners who have trained seriously are familiar with interval training. For those who are not, Interval training is simply a series of hard runs with a recovery period. For example an interval training session might be: 10x 400m with 3 minutes rest after each 400m hard run.

Forerunner Interval Workouts can be used to track your repetition workouts and with it's GPS abilities, can signal when to start or stop based on the distance you have run. This allows you to workout by distance, even in areas where you have no foreknowledge of the actual distance in advance.

Interval Workouts, unlike Advanced Workouts can be created on the wrist-watch. To create one, you first set the type of workout, (distance or time), the repetition duration or time, the recovery time or distance and the number of repetitions in the workout. Forerunner Interval Workouts also lets you set an optional warm-up and cool-down period at the beginning and end.

As you approach the end of each interval, an alarm sounds and counts down until the next interval. An interval can be manually ended at any time with the LAP/RESET button. If you include a warm-up, the Forerunner will switch to the warm-up phase when you start the session (press LAP to end the warm-up and start your first interval). If you set a cool-down, the watch enters this phase after your last interval.

How the Forerunner 310XT Garmin Watch Differs From the Forerunner 305/205

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rod_McAnally]Rod McAnally

Garmin, in recent years, has made the GPS fitness sports watch market their own. The early Garmin Watch models, 101, 201 and 301 were ahead of their time, but the next generation of GPS watches released a few years ago (the 205, 305 and 405) had much improved GPS chipsets enabling them to lock onto a signal much quicker than their predecessors and perhaps more importantly, stay locked on.

If you are looking to take their training to a new level, you should consider what a GPS watch has to offer.

A GPS watch can measure your speed and distance traveled as well as plot an accurate route of your runs which can be viewed on computer. It is a fitness trainer, coach, and essential analytical tool all in one that allows you to set speed or pace alerts to notify you if you are running too fast or too slow, plus a lot more.

In April of 2009, Garmin released an upgrade to the Forerunner 305XT, which is based on Garmin's exhaustive analysis of athletes feedback and has resulted in some pleasant changes.

The first way the 310CX differs from the Forerunner 305 is it's looks.

Like the Forerunner 305 this watch is large and chunky and does not pass an every day watch, but with extra size comes much greater functionality. The 305XT has the same large-sized screen, but a stylish silver face opposed to the red of 305 and blue of the 205.

Incidentally the 205 and 305 Garmin watches are identical except the 205 does not support a heart rate monitor device, the new 310XT does not have two distinctive models.

The new watch features the same button layout, the only difference is the two buttons on the front of the watch are smaller in size then it's predecessor. It's unclear if this is and advantage or disadvantage in practice, but I'd guess it's not a lot different.

Perhaps the most noted advantage of this watch is the fact that the Forerunner 310CX is water resistant to 50 meters. The Forerunner 305 is water resistant to IPX7 standards, which means it can be submersed in water to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes without harm. While triathletes will be rejoicing at this feature, it should be noted that heart rate monitoring and GPS features do not work while you are swimming.

Never-the-less, this watch can be used to time your swims without fear of harm which will please many.

The other big advantage of the Forerunner 310XT is its 20 hour battery life.

GPS watches consume a lot of power when in full GPS mode. The Forerunner 305 has a typical battery life of around 8-10 hours. While this is enough for most activities, some ultra endurance events can extend well beyond this limit. With an 100%+ increase in battery life to around 20 hours, the new Forerunner watch will clearly please ultra athletes for who the old limitation was a problem.

The Garmin Watch comes with a rechargeable battery. While jacking it into the recharger overnight is not a major deal, not having to do so every night will surely be a welcome change for most users.

Other improvements include a better GPS receiver with the addition of HotFix, heart rate based calorie computation and wireless computer connectivity via an ANT stick. The wireless setup is the same as the Forerunner 405's, but unlike the 405 the 310XT does not support unit-to-unit transfer.

While the new upgrades are exciting, the 310XT does feature some notable downgrades that Garmin have been quiet about. There is no support for routes, whereas the Forerunner 205 and 305 could store 50 routes in memory and no simple workouts, a quick-start mode where you enter time, distance or calorie goals and off you go.

So in summary, the Forerunner 310XT differs from the 205 and 305 Forerunner watches in these ways:

New stylish look and feel50 meter water resistanceHeart based calorie calculationExtended 20 hour battery lifeImproved GPS receptionWireless connectivity to PC or MacNo support for routesNo simple workoutsOverall, the new watch from Garmin is not revolutionary, but it is certainly very cool! It features almost all the capabilities of the 205 and 305 watches, minus the noted exclusions.

Swimmers and triathletes will welcome the new waterproof abilities of the new Garmin Watch, but given that GPS and heart rate monitoring don't work in the water, it will probably fall short of delivering everything these athletes wish for. Ultra endurance competitors will love the extended battery life and it is a worthy purchase based on this advantage alone.

How to Use GPS Sports Watches For Fitness and Physical Training

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dan_Morton]Dan Morton

If you think that you're going to get healthy sitting in front of the television watching exercise shows, you will be sadly disappointed by the results you get. Or, more to the point, the results you DON'T get!

The key to health through physical activity is ACTION! You must get up and get moving, or you will never be able to meet your fitness goals. In addition to the mental ability to get yourself moving, you may find some of the modern tools, such as a GPS Sports Watch, can really help you develop an exercise program, and stick with that program.

Eat Less - Exercise More
This is a really simple thought, but it is far more difficult in practice. Eating foods you enjoy is fun and comfortable - running 5 miles on a hot summer afternoon can be seen as uncomfortable - and may be considered work by more than a few. But the fact is you MUST trade that eating comfort for an exercise program if you want to lose that weight and get in shape. And there is a great high-tech tool out these to help you develop an exercise program - a GPS Running Watch.

Use a GPS Sport Watch For Fitness Running
Running (or jogging) can be a great and inexpensive way to get in shape and lose that weight you've been carrying around. But, in order for this exercise to be effective, you must have some type of repeatable program, so you can make exercise a part of your life.

You'll need to set a course for your exercise program that you can follow. You can get in your car and drive around, while watching the miles, or you can use your GPS Sports Watch to help you set a course and keep track of the miles that you cover. GPS Sports watches can be an ideal partner in your exercise program.

Which GPS Watch Is Right For You?
There are several ways to answer this question, depending upon your personal preferences.

1. For beginners - a Garmin 405 GPS Enabled Sports Watch with USB and Heart Rate Monitor can be an ideal starting point. It isn't the absolute cheapest you can buy, but it is feature-rich, and has enough capacity to grow with you as your fitness level and exercise programs expands.

2. Intermediate Runners - You've built up a certain level of endurance running on streets through your neighborhood, and may be ready to tackle some mild park trails. A Polar Multisport GPS Computer Heart Rate Monitor Watch RS800CX G3 may fit your needs, with the rugged quality you need for an expanded exercise routine

How To Use Your GPS Watch For Training - Set a Pace And Beat It!
The goal is to raise your level of endurance by setting goals based on distance and time. Start slowly on a pre-determined course (a course that you've set with your Sports Watch), keeping careful track of time. Then, simply work to beat that time every time you run that course. Many GPS watches have a recording feature that lets you keep track of individual workouts - some even let you download to your computer through USB!

For the absolute top quality workout, choose a GPS watch that monitors heart rate. Considering your level of fitness and age, your heart rate can be a great way to monitor the quality of your workouts.

If you're serious about your exercise, get serious about a GPS watch! [http://sportswatchgps.com/]Click HERE to see a huge selection of the most popular GPS Sports Watches, read reviews and find out where the lowest prices are.

Garmin Nuvi 1300 Series GPS - Newest Wide Screen GPS From Garmin

Garmin announced the Nuvi 1300 series in March 2009. The projected date for release was originally in May, but it is now set for June 28, 2009. The 1300 product line is a wide screen model with a diagonal dimension of 4.3 inches. Garmin made this model to be a multi-functional unit so it works well in your car and you can take it with you when you navigate abound the city on foot. The five units in the product line are all thinner and lighter than the wide screen models in the old product lines. All these units are 0.6 inches thick versus 0.8 inches for the older models.

The 1300 series units are also lighter than their predecessors (5.7 ounces versus 6.1 ounces). All units in the Nuvi 1300 series speak street names which is the most important feature in an automotive GPS.

The Nuvi 1300 is the basic unit in the series:

· 4.3 inch display (diagonal)
· Speaks street names
· Preloaded street maps for lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico
· Optional FM lifetime traffic information
· Where am I?
· Photo navigation
· ecoRoute™
· Optional MSN® Direct

The Nuvi 1200 and 1300 series have the optional cityXplorer™ which you can download from Garmin for as low as $9.99 per city. This gives you the ability to navigate around the city like a native. It shows you where to walk or where to catch a bus or a subway.

The Nuvi 1300 does not have lane assist, but all the other units in the series do.

The "T" suffix on the model number indicates that the unit has lifetime traffic included in the price (1350T, 1370T, and 1390T).

Two of these units, the Nuvi 1370T and the Nuvi 1390T have Bluetooth® wireless so you can use them for hands free calling with your Bluetooth® cell phone.

The Garmin list prices for these units are:

· Nuvi 1300 $249.99
· Nuvi 1350 $299.99
· Nuvi 1350T $349.99
· Nuvi 1370T $449.99
· Nuvi 1390T $399.99

If these GPS follow the usual product life cycle of most GPS, the units will soon sell lower than the manufacturer's list price.

The projected ship date for the 1300 series on Amazon.com has been June 28, 2009. However, Amazon began selling units of the 1300 series on June 21. Learn how to find more information about these new Garmin Nuvi 1300 series GPS in the resource information following this article.

SkyCaddie SG2.5 Golf GPS Review

Weighing in at only 3.8 oz makes the SkyCaddie SG2.5 the lightest weight rangefinder on the market today. This is possibly one of the reasons why it actually gets used by many of its owners rather than left behind.

Even though it is so small and light it still has a fair amount of punch behind it comprising of a lot of useful features. Not full of flashy stuff but just what you need to get on with and enjoy your round of Golf, while helping improve your game by taking a lot of the guesswork out of it.

With such a compact Golf GPS it is surprising to learn that it uses the patented Intelligreen software that allows the player to see the full depth of the green from whichever way you are approaching it. On top of this it uses the SkyCaddie human mappings for its course data where there are actual people go to each course and map each feature of every hole by hand. This information is then checked three times for each hazard and hole. This is claimed to give more accurate data than the more normal satellite information that its competitors use.

All the above information is displayed on a large clear grey scale display which is readable in all lighting conditions.

With one touch user controls and easy to use software package it is no surprise that it is a popular Golf GPS with many golfers recommending it over its competitors.

The unit will hold up to 10 courses information at any one time there is also a rather unique option to be able to use a expansion card to increase its memory.

Unfortunately this unit does not come with the feature to save and analyze your rounds information as many of the other Golf GPS do.

While researching this SkyCaddie SG2.5 Golf GPS review we found some negative comments about the software installation and setup of the unit on Windows computers. This combined with the fact that they claim to have had poor help from the SkyCaddie customer support left some users very frustrated with their new purchase.

Most users are happy with the unit once they figure out how to get the SkyCaddie SG2.5 set up and ready to go. So if you are confident with installing and using software on your computer and do not require a Golf GPS with loads of flashy features and buttons then this could be the unit for you. If not then you may be better off looking to some of its competitors.

SkyCaddie SG5 Review - The Latest Golf GPS Device From SkyGolf

Attention: NEW GADGET ALERT!!!! The new SkyCaddie SG5 Pro is now available from SkyGolf, so before I went out and threw down my hard earned cash, I borrowed one from a friend and this is my short Skycaddie SG5 review. The latest unit from Skygolf boasts a new a large color display and a long-lasting rechargeable battery (hopefully the battery better than previous versions). Along with the patented Intelligreen Technology that was also on the previous SG4, the following are features of the new SG5 Pro.

Brilliant, outdoor-readable color display with automatic backlight

IntelliGreen technology

Rugged, water-resistant case

Drop-in lithium-rechargeable battery

LED battery charging indicator

Easy to use, one-handed operation

User-selectable color themes

I currently have the SG4 and the main complaint I have is that the battery only lasts for 2 full rounds. It doesn't appear that they have upgraded the battery for the SG5, because that's about the most life I got from the battery in that unit as well. Occasionally, the SG4 & the SG5 will take a long time to connect to the satellites. Even when it's showing that there are 3 or 4 satellites in the area, it can take a hole or more for yardages to show up. Because of this, I suggest that you fire the Skycaddie up as soon as you reach the course, to give it enough time to connect, before you tee off.

Honestly, the rest of the features on the SG5 are pretty much the same as the SG4. You still get yardages to objects such as large trees, bunkers, water hazards, end of fairways etc. With the Intelligreen system, you can move the flag position over the entire green to get accurate yardages to just about any spot they can think to put the flagstick. One of my favorite features on the Skycaddies is the ability to measure shot yardages. By simply pressing the "mark" button at your current location, and then again when you reach your ball, you will get accurate distances for the shot you just hit. This is a great way to learn how far you actually hit each club, and to have fun long drive competitions with your friends.

I never knew how off I was on my distances until I got a SkyCaddie and started hunting down pins. Other than the color screen, I don't see any huge benefit of the new SG5 over the previous models. MSRP on the SG5 is $429 on the SkyCaddie website, but you can still get the SG4 in the low $300's. I highly recommend a skycaddie to golfers of all levels. It may be the best piece of golf equipment you'll buy this year. Visit [http://www.tourgolfblog.com/2007/09/check-out-new-skycaddie-sg5.html]SkyCaddie SG5 Reviews for more information and pricing.

What GPS Navigation Devices Can Be Used in Vehicles?

Recently, a reader wrote - I'm thinking about buying a GPS to assist me while traveling. But, I'm totally ignorant about how they work and how they can help me.

I have some basic doubts like "If I'm going to 3 different places - how should I tell this to my GPS. Do I have to pre-program the GPS before I set out to the three places or do I do them one at a time?

How are the addresses loaded into the GPS? Is there a input device like keyboard or pad?

Most GPSs look so small--how can I pay attention to them while I am driving?

What brand of GPS do you recommend that I should go for as a beginner with little technical or technological skills

What experiences have you had with GPS navigation and GPS devices in general?

I know I am asking a lot of questions. But I am lost, really. Thanks for your help in advance.

I will try to answer all your questions in the following paragraphs.

GPS - Your Questions Answered

First, using a GPS is quite simple and easy. Most of the GPS receivers have been designed to be intuitive. They are easy to use and operate.

Like for example entering your destination into a GPS unit is simple and straight forward. While the exact method varies depending on the GPS device you are using. For most devices, you just have to type out the address using an on screen keyboard.

Some have touch screens and others require key presses.

If you are going to more than one place some GPS receivers allow you to enter them at the start of your trip. While others you'll need to enter your next destination after you reach your first destination.

Again, it depends on the GPS device you are using.

First I would suggest you get comfortable with GPS receivers before you buy. Check out the various devices at your local store before you decide one.

Don't be worried about the size most have screens which are quite large enough to make out the destinations, maps, streets etc.

Most important point - you "don't have to look" at your GPS screen while driving. Your focus should always on the road and your driving. The GPS devices should not be a distraction while you drive.

For this very reason, almost all GPS receivers for cars come with voice commands. They will give your voice prompts about where you are where and which direction to turn at an intersection or which exit to take. The display typically show directional indications and limited map information.

This way they can be used for navigation while you focus on the driving. Apart from this the more advanced GPS devices even have information about hotels, gas stations, restrooms, and much more.

A word of warning here don't try to program or fiddle with your GPS unit while driving. You won't type a message to a friend while driving would you? Same thing here.

Try to enter your commands before your start for your destination and perform as few as possible commands on the device while driving.
If you have to enter your commands then stop your car.

Garmin's nuvi and StreetPilot range and TomTom systems are very good. Magellan also have pretty decent GPS systems for cars - they are the makers of the NeverLost system that are used in Hertz rental cars.

From my experience I would suggest you to get a GPS unit that not only gives voice prompts for directions, but also give the names of the streets. Instead of just giving directions like "go left","go right" or straight it's more helpful when you know the street names too. You know you are doing the right thing. Knowing the name of the street helps significantly to follow the directional information provided by the unit.

The low cost models only speak the directions you need to take.
